What Does The Bible Say About Swearing?
Quotes are from the RSV Catholic Edition or the Douay-Rheims
Leviticus 5:4-5 – The person that sweareth, and uttereth with his lips, that he would do either evil or good, and bindeth the same with an oath, and his word, and having forgotten it afterwards understandeth his offence, Let him do penance for his sin,
Ecclesiasticus 23:9, 11-14 – Let not thy mouth be accustomed to swearing: for in it there are many falls. […] For as a slave daily put to the question, is never without a blue mark: so every one that sweareth, and nameth, shall not be wholly pure from sin. A man that sweareth much, shall be filled with iniquity, and a scourge shall not depart from his house. And if he make it void, his sin shall be upon him: and if he dissemble it, he offendeth double: And if he swear in vain, he shall not be justified: for his house shall be filled with his punishment.
Ecclesiasticus 27:15 – The speech that sweareth much shall make the hair of the head stand upright: and its irreverence shall make one stop his ears.
Zacharias 5: 1,3 -And I turned and lifted up my eyes: and I saw, and behold a volume flying. […] And he said to me: This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the earth: for every thief shall be judged as is there written: and every one that sweareth in like manner shall be judged by it.
Matthew 5:33-37 – “Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.
Matthew 23:20-22 – So he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; and he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it; and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it.
James 5:12 – But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under condemnation.
Jude 1:9– But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, disputed about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a reviling judgment upon him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”
