God created purely spiritual beings called angels. Although unseen, angels are present and working in the world. They are able to know and love truth in a more full and perfect way than is possible for humans. This love, however, is an act of free will giving angels the choice to love God. Because angels have an intellect, and were given free will by God, they had the possibility of accepting or rejecting God’s infinite love. The good angels chose God, the bad angels did not. During the rebellion of the angels, some turned their backs on God and rejected His infinite love. Satan became the antagonist of God’s loving wisdom during the fall of the angels. This is revealed when Jesus stated a highly evocative sentence: “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning” (Luke 10:18). Satan and his angels rejected truth and wish to destroy everything full of grace and love.
