‘A time is coming when people will go mad…’

Posted By on July 22, 2011

My friend Frank Weathers over at Why I Am Catholic shared with me the following quote today:

“A time is coming when people will go mad and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him, saying, “You are mad because you are not like us.” _St. Anthony the Great

Frank…you rock. Just sayin’… (By the way, that quote appeared in his post about St. Anthony the Great back in January, 2010.)

I’m a little surprised to see such a prophetic quote about the things I see happening today in the world…but not very. For someone like myself who is trying with everything she’s got to live a life based on faith and reason while dealing with Bipolar Disorder, I can tell you that I do sometimes think that the world probably looks FAR more chaotic to me than it does to the average person. From my end, it looks like absolute and utter chaos out there. Thank goodness, my kids are in a wonderful school, and we are members of a very good parish. I think that is by the grace of God. Everything else is such…a…mess….or at least…it seems that way to me.

Maybe if the world looked to the average person the way it looks to me, the average person would get even more upset about false messages than I do. I sometimes find myself being overly critical of people who are really on the same side of this mess as I am, and I’m sorry for that. I don’t mean harm. I do know…truly…that sincerity is always important, too….but when there is so little truth out there, and when truth is what keeps some of us alive (sometimes literally), it’s not really on the program to avoid those situations. Perhaps it should be, but it…is….hard. Very hard.

No one wants to be seen as having gone mad. Because of this, it’s only to be expected that some (many?) will accept a form of madness (rejection of reason) in order to be accepted by those who live in that mindset, because they see them as being of the majority opinion. Sometimes, they accommodate those who believe lies by telling the same lies themselves, to win them over, like trophies…or as voters. We know this happens because there was a Holocaust in Europe not so long ago, and many other genocides besides, because so many are so willing to live in a world of lies. Today, we have the abortion genocide. What madness is it that mothers will kill the children in their wombs?

But then, I also see signs of hope. I wrote today at Live Action about the out-dated and extremist arguments of the pro-abortion movement: Huffington Post, Guttmacher Defend Abortion Through Ninth Month of Pregnancy

While the rest of us are living in the 21st century, extremist apologists for abortion at all stages of gestation, for any reason, and without any consequences whatsoever for those doctors who continue in this very lucrative business, insist that we all continue to operate under a 1970s-era mentality. We think women deserve better than anything that this out-dated, extremist and backward-thinking movement offers for public consumption.

Read the whole thing to see just how backward the pro-abortion movement has become.

Bear with me as I say this. Many sane people have ‘gone mad’, as in the quote from St. Anthony the Great, and they do attack those who have not gone mad and call them ‘mad’ for not agreeing with the madness. For someone like me who is constantly trying to stay focused on reality, the “madness of the sane” makes the whole world look rather like a circus to me. If even I can see some hope in it…perhaps you should, too.

Frank is very good to share this wisdom, too.

Once the famous St. Anthony was conversing with some brethren when a hunter who was after game in the wilderness happened by. He saw Abbot Anthony and the brothers enjoying themselves and clucked his tongue in disapproval. Abbot Anthony told him, “Put an arrow in your bow and shoot it.” He did so. “Now shoot another,” said the abbot. “And another . . . and another.” The hunter complained, “If I bend my bow all the time, it will break.” Abbot Anthony smiled gently as his point stuck home. “It’s that way, too, with the work of God. If we keep pushing ourselves too hard, the brothers will soon collapse.”

This is a marathon, people, not a sprint!

God bless you, Frank, and God bless all the other sane people, too, especially the ones who tolerate me when it is a bit too much for me.

A nod to Esther, Stuart, MariaSr. Lisa, Holy Family Radio…etc.

Lisa, I’m not bipolar and I look out and see madness. People have seriously lost their minds and yet if you point that out you will be the one considered mad.

Thanks for letting me know your thoughts, Mandy. The Pope has said we’re entering a dark age. I believe he is right. All the more reason for me to work on my patience.

  3. Stuart says:

*Sigh* It just seems to be getting madder….

Is the madness and chaos you are having to deal with reaching you through the internet? Or television? No one’s brain can process all the information and the emotions that come from them. In addition there is all the stimuli that comes from children, friends etc. It is too much for anybody. Over-stimulation can lead to inappropriate responses. Find a quiet place and obey Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God.”
